Making your bedroom a haven–with a free gift for whoever would like to join!

Do you like your bedroom?

Is it a haven for your husband and yourself?

Does your bedroom engender a feeling of retreat for your weary man at the end of the day?

Does your room create a feeling of rest and refreshment when you walk into it?

I would like to encourage you to step back and take a look at your master bedroom. Too often as busy parents, our master bedroom becomes a catch-all for the family.  Books get piles, papers get cluttered, clothes get shoved in the corner. Ask me how I know.

Many of us, with large families have babies in the room with us, and so there is the added equipment and items that come with this as well.  Piles build up, the bed is doing well to even get made.  And we drop into bed exhausted to sleep and begin it all over again tomorrow.

But, I would challenge you today to rethink about this area of your home.  Begin to think of your bedroom as a retreat for you and your husband.

A retreat for you throughout the day, where in the busy-ness of the daily activity you can take a moment to go in and shut the door…and breathe.   A tranquil area of respite for a few minutes, to enable you to enter back into the world of playdoe and Thomas the Tank Engine once again with renewed vigor and cheerfulness.

A retreat for your husband when he comes home at the end of the day.  Where he can unburden his soul to you in the comfort of your own little suite.  A place in the evening where in the quiet of the night you can whisper soothing encouragement to his weary heart.

A place of rest and quiet. A place of prayer and reflection.  A place where your heart can take a deep breath.

I would like to challenge you to slowly do small things to turn your bedroom into a welcoming suite for your you and your man.

You can do this very inexpensively–

You can do this even with having small children in the room with you–

You can do this whether your room is large or small–

In my next few posts I will share several ideas for you, that are inexpensive and easy.

Let’s make our rooms havens of rest for ourselves and our husbands.

If there are any of you who would like to do this…I am going to give you a free copy of my ebook Embracing the Mess.

To participate: here is what you must do…

~Become a subscriber to A Mother’s Heritage, so you do not miss a single bit of encouragement.

~Comment below letting me know that you are joining in this challenge.

~Email me a “before” and “after” photo of what you do in your room.

You must actually give your room a mini makeover, through small touches like I will be suggesting in my next post. (Just sending me a photo of your current room with no changes does not count).

~My favorite before and after photo I will post here on my blog, if I have your permission.

So who is ready to make your bedroom a haven?

Hi!  I am new to your blog.  I’m coming over from Generation Cedar.  I can’t even begin to tell you how timely this challenge is for me.  My bedroom is a disaster!  I am not exaggerating at all.  It is completely embarassing.  I will send my “before” photo after work tonight.  I cannot wait to make over my room!  Thank you!

  • Kate

I’m joining the challenge! I really want a copy of your book and we recently switched rooms and put the kids in the master bedroom, so our smaller room is empty and ready for some improvement :) . Do you want us to wait and send both pictures together (before and after) or send you the before now and the after when we’re finished? Also, can I send you a picture of our now- storage room (the other small bedroom) that contains everything that used to be stuffed in our room? We literally just changed our rooms over Saturday. Thanks! Looking forward to some cheap (or free?) ideas to make our room a haven!

  • Courbron5

I have thought about this for some time now. My room is a catch all for all of the stuff I have no idea to do with. I will definately be taking  your challenge!

  • Pam

I hope to join you, Jenny, but the likelihood of photos is slim.  My camera’s memory filled up over the weekend, and I am technically challenged anyway.  Thank you for the encouragement to do the job.

I am so glad you all are taking up the challenge! Get ready to have some fun! As far as photos…save your before photos until the end and then send me both. Have fun! :)

This is wonderful…I definitely needed this extra little challenge to give me the boot! Before pictures have been taken and will be emailed to you before the end of the day!  Hopefully, I will have done a little work in there by the end of the day, too!  I became a subscriber yesterday and your button is on my blog.

    Thanks so much!

OH! This will series will be great! On Saturday we realized we needed/wanted our room back so J. got moved into D.’s room. So that is going to be my first step. btw J has transitioned very well-sleeping through the night! Yippee! :)

Sounds fun. I can’t wait to see what people do with their bedrooms!

I would love to join.  What is the time frame for submitting the before and after photos?  My room used to house my 5th child, but now just has her playpen there with socks in it to sort!  My room is a definite catch all (and hide all).  It’s not a retreat at all!

Let’s make the time frame 2 weeks. This should give everyone plenty of time to do what they would like to do to make their room a haven. So, everyone should have their before and after photo sent to me by midnight November 22. I will plan on a post with my favorite pics on Monday, November 28th.

THis is an excellent idea! I’m joining the challange and I am so excited to make our room better!

  • http://becomingGodsgift.blogspot.com tascha.piatt

excited about this! I have been trying!! for a while now to STOP letting our room be the catch-all.
which means FINDING homes for things or just getting rid of them!
[we are 6 people in 3 bedrooms-not complaining. just saying. storage must be creative, and decorative! :) ]
I will be adding the button to my sidebar.

  • mylachelle

I love the idea of doing a mini makeover in our master bedroom!! Can’t wait to read you suggestions.

  • Schaeferclan

I’m in!  Right now, I have six bins and the clothes to fill them (you know- a summer and a winter bin for each category- the pregnant bins, the non-pregnant bins, and the “dream” bins- dream, as in “I have not fit into these clothes for the past 5 years”) in piles all over our bedroom, because it seems like the last item on my list to get done- after all, no one outside our family goes in there, and by the end of the day, I’m just too tired to deal with it.  I suppose I have been procrastinating, since I should probably be joining your weight-loss Wednesdays, as the non-pregnancy items that actually fit are mighty slim.  Anyhow, even just getting thru those clothes and finding the floor again will be an improvement.  I know it will help us feel more at peace and sleep better too.  Thanks for giving me some motivation!

    His,
    Nancy

I have always struggled with keeping the master bedroom nice.  When kids bring me outgrown clothes or things they don’t know what to do with, guess where I tell them to put them?? on my bed or in my bedroom!!!  We also had a baby in our room for many years . . . but our babies are growing up!  (Youngest is now 7!)  So, we don’t have that.  But, my youngest does do school in my room, watching her distance learning classes on my bed . . . so my husband often comes home to her school mess, paper cutting trash, etc. PLUS the unfolded laundry on the bed!  ;)  Looking forward to this challenge!

Is it to late to join ??  This is so what I need!!!  Even if it is too late to get in on the give away I am still doing this!! Our Bedroom had become the final resting place for everything I didn’t know what to do with, as well as stuff waiting to go to starage, I cleaned and organized much of it last week, but it still needs so much more!!

    • Anonymous

It is absolutely not too late! As long as you have a before and after pic to me by the deadline (check the step 2 post for the date) you will receive your free copy! I am thrilled to have you join in…have fun!
