Why onions?  Onions contain generous amounts of flavonoid quercetin that is useful for not only congestion, but many chronic diseases. Its vitamin and mineral contents are vitamin C, iron, calcium, carotene, phosphorus, thiamine, riboflavin and niacin

Onions are a powerful “medicine” that are easy to afford and keep on hand.  If someone in my family is battling congestion, I almost always have an onion handy to send them on the mend.

A simple home remedy to break up congestion is to:
  • Bake an onion in a glass pan on 350 degrees for about 20 minutes.  You want the onion to be slimy, but not browned.
  • Rub olive oil on the chest for a protective barrier
  • Place cooked onions on the chest – be sure that they are comfortable to the touch.  The onions need to be warm enough to break up the congestion, but be sure isn’t hot enough to burn.
  • Cover the onion with a warm, wet towel and then a dry towel on top of that.
  • Tuck patient in bed and leave the poultice on all day or over night.
  • Repeat as needed.

Have you successfully used onions for chest congestion?
