Are you malnourished?

Like newborn infants, long for the pure spiritual milk, that by it you may grow up into salvation 1 Peter 2:2

Newborn Babies
I just gave birth to my precious eighth child only two weeks ago.

In the early days right after a baby is born there is an amazing amount of sweetness along with utter neediness and dependence of that baby. There is really nothing like those first few weeks. With all of my children I look back on it and it is somewhat of a blur due to lack of sleep, and this time is no exception. Many times there is just nothing that satisfies this sweet little person except more milk.

Day and night.

Constant dependence and almost non-stop eating. A helplessness like no other time as her very life depends on my body to sustain her.

I already see her growing. If she hadn’t made any progress in the last weeks since her birth, I would be concerned. But already she is lifting her head, becoming more alert and filling out her clothes a little more. The Lord is graciously using her constant intake of milk to develop and grow her little body and mind.

What About Me?
Have I ever been that dependent on the pure milk of the Word of God? And if there was such a time am I still maturing in my intake of it? Because sometimes I stagnate.

There have been times in my life when I have treated God’s Word as essential, and other times I stray or become sluggish in my intake of the Bread of Life.

That is a frightening reality. I don’t love God’s Word enough; I am not dependent enough on it. Though at times I have spent time and energy feeding on it as the vital and crucial discipline that it is, many times I treat is as a delicacy…dessert…optional.

Could you be shuffling through your spiritual life, trying to give to your family while operating on an empty tank. Are you malnourished?

We must treat God’s Word as essential…because it is! Like a newborn baby who would die without the pure milk she needs, so we too must have the pure spiritual milk that stimulates and builds up our souls– planting us like trees by rivers of water.
