Homeschooling- What Truly Matters?

Family / Thursday, January 5th, 2012
“But thou, O man of God, flee these things; and follow after righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, meekness. Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses.”
2 Timothy 6:11-12
Sometimes we can lose sight of what is truly important, what is eternally important. Sometimes we home school our children for the state.  For our extended family.  For our friends or neighbors or people at church.  And not in a positive way.
However, we must only educate our children for the Lord and in the ways of the Lord.

Many times I’ve found myself feeling frustrated with one or more of my children because they just weren’t “getting it” when it came to a certain subject, usually math.  The frustration came because I wasn’t educating them for my Lord, I was educating them for my state laws.
We have to stay on schedule you know!  Junior must finish that lesson or we’ll be behind and my log book won’t look right. Enough! No, no, no… No.  This shouldn’t be.

I’ll admit, as I’ve gotten older and have more children here to educate, I’ve become more relaxed about it, less frustrated.  I’ve learned that it doesn’t matter if Junior finishes that page or not.  What matters, what truly matters is that I’ve nurtured my children and brought them up in the admonition of the Lord.

  • It matters that they are “kind to one another.”

  • It matters that they “prefer others better than themselves.”

  • It matters that they love the Lord their God with all their mind, soul, heart and strength.

These are the things that truly matter for time and all eternity.

It is so easy to get caught up with lessons and laws and regulations that we lose sight of true importance.  Sometimes when I’ve gotten flustered, I will just stop and pray, and have the children come into the other room to watch a Moody Science Video. Breaks are necessary at times!

We need to keep the goal in front of us.
What is the prize we are reaching after?

A new year is upon us, and now is the perfect time to reassess what we are doing in our home schools.
It’s a great time to set new goals and go over old ones.

What are some of your goals this year for your children and their education?
