Is Titus 2 for me in my singleness?

Family, Single Titus 2 Womanhood / Friday, February 3rd, 2012

You are a Christian, desiring to follow the Lord in your life.  You have been taught to esteem the role of godly womanhood as a blessed position.  To be a wife and mother has been your chief earthly desire, as you have seen the high calling that scripture has made it to be.

And you still are not married.

All that is in you wants to be, but the Lord has not opened that door yet.  He has not brought that young man into your life yet…

and you are waiting.

What do you do in the meantime?  What if the Lord’s will is that you never marry…then what?  Are you excluded from being a Titus 2 woman?  Does this mean that you missed something, that biblically you have to fit into a different catagory?  I am afraid too many come to this conclusion.

Today I would like to encourage you that Single Titus 2 women are very precious to the Lord and have every application to Titus 2 as a married woman does. So journey with me as I try to lay out a few particulars from my heart.

The aged women likewise, that they be in behaviour as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things;

That they may teach the young women to be sober, to love their husbands, to love their children,

To be discreet, chaste, keepers at home, good, obedient to their own husbands, that the word of God be not blasphemed.

How specifically can Titus 2 apply to the single woman of God?

  • “That they be in behavior as becometh holiness, not false accusers, not given to much wine, teachers of good things…That they may teach the young women to be sober.”

I think it goes without saying that the character qualities of the married godly woman also apply to the single women.   As a Titus 2 single sister the Lord can develop in you a maturity that is beautiful to behold.  A poised, calm woman full of grace and wisdom that is steeped in the word of God is precious.  This can only come through much intimacy with the Lord, frequent moments on her knees, and a teachable heart towards the means of grace.  As a single woman most of you may have time that many do not.  Use it wisely, treasure the moments of rich communion with Jesus that will steady your heart and give you this godliness as a single woman.

  • “To be discreet and chaste…to love their own husbands”.

“Ok”, you might be thinking, “I know about the discretion and chastity but to love my own husband?”  I don’t have a husband.  Do you know that in keeping yourself pure you are loving your future husband, should the Lord have one for you in the future? Too often I see a flippancy about our young ladies…where is the chaste maidenhood that loves purity?  Yes, the flirtatious girls might have the boys around them like honeybees around a hive, but those are not the girls they are looking for to marry.  Love your own (future) husband and have Christ-like love to other women’s husbands by behaving in a seemly, pure, holy manner in your dress as well as your conduct and behavior.

  • “Keeper at Home”

Do you know that in helping your mother, a Christian sister, a faithful friend in her home, by encouraging her, practically assisting her, being sensitive to her needs, you are being a keeper at home?  Do you know that in prizing the things that surround womanhood and the beauties of homemaking, nurturing and Kingdom building you are being a keeper at home?  There are so many, many ways you can have an important part in the beautiful vision of godly homemaking, and raising of the next generation, which leads me to the next point…

  • “Loving their children”.

“I don’t have any children.”  Oh, dear sister think again! God has given you children all around you!  Your other family members’ children, your church family’s children, your neighbor’s children…these are all gifts to you. The church of Jesus Christ is one body, you have a huge role in the lives of your church family, including the little ones. And you may not have any idea how much influence you are having on these covenant children.  A smile, a kind word of wisdom, and especially your example is so important in their lives.

In conclusion, you may come to a blog such as A Mother’s Heritage and wonder if it applies to you.  Remember the glory of God is the priority in each of our lives.  We are each vessels for the Lord, in His service. My hope is that through the various posts at AMH you too may be encouraged in your Titus 2 roles as varied as they may be.

~You may not have physical children from your womb, but look around you at the children that you can minister to in your life.

I would encourage you that you can serve and use your time, your talents, you energies towards Kingdom Building.

And remember YOU are precious in the sight of God!
